Entitlement to vacation depends on the working time during the calendar year. In 2022, a full-time worker is entitled to 20 legal vacation days in 2023, prorated for part-time work. Reduction of working time (RTT) days may also be added, often granted to meet the average weekly working hours.
Legal vacation days must be taken within the calendar year, under penalty of sanctions. RTT and other types of leave may have different rules. Unused vacation days can be converted into sick leave in the case of illness, but only for legal vacation days.
Starting in 2024, unused legal vacation days can be carried over for a maximum period of 24 months after the end of 2024. However, the employer must pay them by December 31, 2024, at the latest. If the worker changes employers, the former employer must specify on the vacation certificate the days not taken and still available.
